UV lights for HVAC get sold as everything from a mold cure to a whole-home air purifier. The truth is narrower and still useful, especially in a humid climate like ours.
How do UV lights for HVAC work?
A UV-C lamp is mounted inside the air handler, usually just above or beside the cooling coil. Ultraviolet light at that wavelength damages the genetic material of mold, bacteria and other microorganisms, which stops them from growing on the surfaces it shines on. The lamp runs continuously, so the coil and drain pan get constant exposure.
What do UV lights actually do well?
They keep the coil cleaner. The EPA notes that UV lamps aimed at cooling coils and drain pans can help control microbial growth on those surfaces. That matters in San Antonio, where the coil stays wet for most of the year. A cleaner coil means:
- Fewer musty smells when the AC turns on.
- Better airflow through the coil, because there is less growth clogging the fins.
- Less buildup to send into freshly cleaned ducts.
What UV lights do not do
- They do not clean the air very well. Air moves past the lamp in a fraction of a second, which is usually too short an exposure to do much.
- They do not remove dust or pollen. That is the filter's job.
- They do not clean the ducts. Growth or debris already in the ductwork stays there.
- They do not fix a moisture problem. A clogged drain line still needs clearing.

They are worth considering if you have a recurring musty smell, someone at home with allergies or asthma, a coil that needs cleaning often, or you have just had your ducts cleaned and want to keep the system cleaner longer. If none of those apply, a good filter and a yearly duct cleaning may be all you need.
Maintenance and safety
UV-C output fades over time even while the bulb still glows, so most manufacturers recommend replacing the bulb about once a year. Check the rating on your lamp. UV-C light can harm eyes and skin, which is why it is installed inside the closed air handler, and why the system should be switched off before anyone opens the panel.
