How often does a chimney need cleaning?
The National Fire Protection Association standard for chimneys, NFPA 211, recommends an inspection once a year, with cleaning as needed. A common rule of thumb in the industry is to clean when soot or creosote buildup reaches about one-eighth of an inch. If you burn a lot of wood, or burn wood that is not fully seasoned, you will reach that point faster.
What is creosote and why does it matter?
Creosote is the dark, tar-like residue that smoke leaves on the inside of the flue. It builds up in layers and it burns. A chimney fire can crack the flue liner and let heat reach the wood framing of the house, sometimes without anyone noticing at first.
Signs your chimney needs attention
- A strong campfire smell in the house, especially on humid days or when the AC runs.
- Black flakes or debris falling into the firebox.
- Smoke that drifts into the room instead of going up.
- Fires that are hard to start or keep going.
- Birds, squirrels or other animals heard in the chimney over the summer.

Do gas fireplaces need chimney cleaning?
They do not build creosote the way wood does, but they still need a yearly look. Nests, leaves and debris can block the vent, and a blocked gas vent can push combustion gases back into the house. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors whenever you use any fuel-burning fireplace.
